Join Glee Singers
We have an open admissions policy - this means no auditions. Anyone who enjoys singing is welcome at our rehearsals. And while experience is greatly appreciated, everyone's contribution is welcome.
The music we sing is often relatively challenging and if you are not used to four part choral singing you may feel a bit out of your depth. If you do, please stick at it...
You're not alone!
We're always happy to go over notes as many times as required if people are struggling and you'll find you'll pick it up quicker than you think. If you're having specific problems, please let us know and we'll do all we can to help you or give you advice. We'd much rather have a large choir that has fun than a small exclusive one, so there's no reason to leave if you think you're struggling.
What do we sing?
We pride ourselves on performing a huge variety of music: madrigals, world music, pop songs, sacred anthems, choral works, barbershop, psalms, carols, new compositions, and hits from musicals - to name but a few!
Our music is challenging, and competition adjudicators have praised our performances. But rehearsals are fun, and there are no auditions.
A nearly-complete list of the repertoire from this and previous seasons is available here. Also see our concerts page for details on events we are currently working for or have just done.
When do we rehearse?
We only rehearse once a week in University term times, with the day and time varying with our bookings. It's usually on a Wednesday evening in a room in Langwith College. If you're not sure whether to expect a rehearsal, e-mail us and we'll let you know.
What about the social side?
We are one of the most active societies on campus. After each rehearsal, we improve our voices still further (!) by socialising in Langwith or Derwent bar. This is a great way to get to know people in the choir without all the music getting in the way! Don't worry if your not a big drinker or if you don't know anyone, alcohol is not the main point of our bar visits and we're very welcoming to new members - you won't be left out!
There are regular socials in York and beyond, and as well as picnics, barbecues, film nights and the now legendary cheese-and-wine evenings. We also hold residential singing weekends at least once a year. Our usual venue is St Mary's Church, Cottonstones, in West Yorkshire - a church in a tiny village we have visited regularly for the past few years.
What does it cost?
The SU requires us to charge a minimum of £4 annual membership.
Your £4 provides:
- Sheet music
- Rehearsal fees
- Concert and travel expenses
We may occasionally ask for a small contribution (a few quid) if we go on a trip - we have to pay the coach driver somehow!
How do I get more information?
Either contact us, or better still, just turn up at a rehearsal and join in!
